Measuring particle aggregation rates by light scattering

چکیده
When colloidal particles are suspended in a liquid, the particle suspension can be stable or unstable. Particles in a stable suspension are dispersed individually. In an unstable suspension, particles aggregate. This means that particles stick to each other, first they form doublets, and later larger aggregates. When there are only small aggregates, one refers to early stages of the aggregation, while when large aggregates dominate, to late stages [1]. The situation is summarized in the scheme below.

متن کاملUnderstanding the colloidal stability of protein therapeutics using dynamic light scattering
Dynamic light scattering (DLS) using noninvasive backscatter (NIBS) detection technology is capable of measuring the hydrodynamic radius of proteins over a large concentration range (0.1 mg/mL to 100 mg/mL). As a result, it is possible to determine, in actual biopharmaceutical formulations, the bulk viscosity/restricted diffusion interaction parameter (kD), particle interaction parameter (B22),...
متن کاملLight scattering by cubical particle in the WKB approximation
In this work, we determined the analytical expressions of the form factor of a cubical particle in the WKB approximation. We adapted some variables (size parameter, refractive index, the scattering angle) and found the form factor in the approximation of Rayleigh-Gans-Debye (RGD), Anomalous Diffraction (AD), and determined the efficiency factor of the extinction. Finally, to illustrate our form...
متن کاملA Computer Modeling of Mie-Scattering by Spherical Droplets Within the Atmosphere
The Earth’s atmosphere is an environment replete with particles of differ-ent sizes with various refractive indices which affect the light radiation traveling through it. The Mie scattering theory is one of the well-known light scattering techniques ap-plicable to modeling of electromagnetic scattering from tiny atmospheric particles or aerosols floating in the air or within the clouds. In this...
متن کاملTowards Measurement of Polarization Properties of Skin using the Ellipsometry Technique
Introduction: The human skin is an active medium from the optical point of view. Therefore, the diagnostic and therapeutic techniques employing light are increasing. Current optical techniques are based on the measurement of the intensity of reflected absorbed or backscattered light from or within skin. Studies have shown that biological tissues, and in particular skin, demonstrate polarization...
